Do you have a great kid? Then let it be known! As the long, cold days of winter give way to the bright, sunshiny days of spring, we all begin to stare dreamily outside longing to break free of the confinement of the indoors. Now imagine how much more intense this need for escape becomes when you are a teenager trapped in the confines of a classroom period after period, day after day. For these young men and women, a reprieve from this indoor sentence would be a wonderful reward. Well, you can help make this escape a reality by joining forces with the Daniel Boone High School’s award winning Green Team, Relay for Life, and the Blazer Foundation. These student-centered organizations have partnered together in an effort to transform one of the high school’s unused courtyards into the Lori Kemp Memorial STEAM Courtyard which will house an outdoor Green Classroom and a Greenhouse laboratory. Imagine your Daniel Boone High School student soaking up the sunshine while learning about the democratic process, while studying trigonometric identities, while exploring US history, while reciting Shakespeare, or while studying Newtonian Mechanics. Further imagine your student sowing flower and vegetable seeds in a Green House Laboratory in which algae, which will later be converted into biodiesel fuel, are growing. How can you make this dream a reality? By letting the world know just how great your Daniel Boone student really is! Is your daughter a four year veteran of the cheerleading squad? Is your son an outstanding student and an example to underclassmen? Is your student a long-term member of the Boy or Girl Scouts? How about a star athlete? A Mr. Boone candidate? A member of the ecology club? Why not commemorate your student’s excellent achievements by purchasing a personalized, engraved brick which will be placed in the patio of the outdoor green classroom thereby permanently recording your child’s accomplishment for future generations to come? Don’t let your child be left out. For more information on how you can become a partner in the courtyard project, please see the following webpage: http://www.blazerfoundation.org/?page_id=363. Thank you for supporting our Daniel Boone students! The Green Team has been honored to represent not only the Daniel Boone High School but also the State of Pennsylvania during the team’s participation in the Lexus Eco Challenge. However, the Green Team recognizes that all good things eventually come to an end. After the Parents’ Science Lab Night on February 19, 2014, the Green Team will fade away into memory. With this realization in mind, the Green Team wants to leave a legacy behind and has searched for a project that will benefit their fellow students and the community as a whole. They have found their project. For decades Daniel Boone teachers, students, and parents have walked the corridors of the high school annex and noticed the courtyards and wondered why the courtyards are never used for anything. Well, that observation is about to change. The Green Team plans to change one of these courtyards into an outdoor Green Classroom and a Greenhouse Laboratory. If the Green Team is successful in the Lexus Eco Final Challenge and wins the $30,000.00 prize, then the Green Team will be allocating $7,000.00 towards this Green Classroom. So, what if they do not win the Final Challenge? The Green Team is still going to make it happen with the help of local businesses and community members through a partnership with the Daniel Boone Blazer Foundation. But wait; there is still more. The Daniel Boone Relay for Life will be joining forces with the Green Team through a “Buy a Brick” program to purchase the bricks necessary to pave the Green Classroom’s sidewalks and patio. The “Buy a Brick” program will give local community members an opportunity to acknowledge loved ones who have been victims of cancer. Additionally, community members may also purchase a brick to acknowledge a teacher, a local Armed Service Member, or a significant student accomplishment. Best of all, a portion of all “Buy a Brick” proceeds will go to the Daniel Boone Relay for Life! Stay tuned as the “Buy a Brick” program develops. You might also wish to mark February 19, 2014, on your calendar and plan on attending the Parents’ Science Lab Night. More information on the “Buy a Brick” program and its associated tax benefits will be available during this evening’s event. In the meantime, check out the proposed courtyard Green Classroom design. Let’s work together to make it happen! |
